Cayman Islands

Many people do not actually know much about the Cayman Islands, as geograhically they are pretty isolated from the other Caribbean countries. When you mention Cayman Islands to most people, they immediately associate the islands with some dodgy money-laundering scheme that the saw on television. As far as being associated with money laundering etc goes, nothing could be further from the truth in Cayman Islands. There are more than 6,000 funds, nearly 600 banks and tens of thousands of companies that operate through the islands. The government has in recent years enforced stricter banking regulation to counter money laundering or other such criminal activities.

The Cayman Islands have no double taxation treaties with other parts of the world, but have undertaken to assist foreign governments by giving them information if any Cayman Island Company has been involved in activities mutually considered criminal. This Treaty does not cover tax offences, thus no information would be revealed if allegations of tax offences were made.

Geography

The Cayman Islands, p
art of an underwater mountain range running between Cuba and Belize, lie 480 miles south of Miami, just 150 miles south of Cuba and 189 miles north-west of Jamaica. With average year-round temperature range of about 75° F in winter to about 85°F in the summer, the Cayman Islands boasts some of the finest tropical weather in the world.

All three islands (Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac & Little Cayman) are coral outcrops surrounded by healthy coral reefs and dramatic walls close to shore, creating ideal conditions for the best diving and snorkeling found in the Caribbean.

Christopher Columbus first spotted Grand in the 1600’s, and in response to the waters teeming with sea turtles; he named it ‘La Tortugas’. Grand Cayman soon became an important port of call for seafarers to restock on fresh meat, water and the silver thatch palm used for rope making.
